Pet Safety Program

Forty-eight percent of family violence victims report being unable to escape their abusers because they are concerned about what will happen to their pets. (Ascione, 2017)  With support from the Banfield Foundation and the American Kennel Club Humane Fund, the MSCFV Pet Safety Program helps victims care for their pets throughout their journey to strength, including:

  • Providing emergency shelter to pets;
  • Ensuring pets are included in protective orders;
  • Welcoming pets in the Rapid Rehousing and Transitional Housing programs; and
  • Providing a client needs fund to cover pet supplies, emergency vet costs, and pet deposits for victims’ new homes.

Victims do not need to leave their pets behind when they are fleeing violence. MSCFV will work with each victim to identify the best way to make sure all are safe, with the ultimate goals of keeping the victim and their beloved pet together.
